Joel A. Merchant is an associate attorney in the firm's New York City office focusing his practice on products liability and toxic tort litigation. Mr. Merchant has experience serving as local counsel for a product manufacturer in New York City Asbestos Litigation (“NYCAL”). Notably, Mr. Merchant has extensive experience managing cases in all stages of litigation, including developing defense strategy, drafting and arguing motions, defending and conducting depositions, negotiating settlements, and preparing for and appearing at trial. Mr. Merchant also has substantial courtroom experience advocating for clients, including arguing discovery motions, motions in limine, and examining witnesses at trial.
Prior to joining Segal McCambridge, Mr. Merchant worked at a personal injury firm in Boston where he was responsible for managing cases from inception through their final resolution, including representing clients at trial.
Mr. Merchant earned his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School with a concentration in trial and appellate advocacy. He participated in the Suffolk Defenders Clinic as a student attorney, and represented indigent criminal defendants throughout the greater Boston area. He also competed on the Suffolk University Law School National Trial Team and was the Champion of the Inter-Scholastic Second-Year Day/Third-Year Evening Trial Competition. Before earning his J.D., Mr. Merchant attended the University of Central Florida where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a minor in Religious Studies.
Outside of the legal arena, Mr. Merchant enjoys comic books, reading, playing chess, traveling and spending time with his family. He is currently licensed to practice in the State of New York and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
