Joel A. Merchant is an associate attorney in the firm's New York City office focusing his practice on toxic tort litigation. He has extensive litigation experience managing cases through all aspects of litigation including, drafting pleadings and motions, preparing for and conducting depositions, negotiating settlements and preparing cases for trial. He also has substantial courtroom experience advocating for clients in court, including arguing discovery motions, motions in limine, and examining witnesses at trial.
Prior to joining Segal McCambridge, Mr. Merchant worked at a personal injury firm in Boston where he was responsible for managing dozens of cases from inception through their final resolution, including representing clients at trial.
Mr. Merchant earned his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School with a concentration in trial and appellate advocacy. He participated in the Suffolk Defenders Clinic as a student attorney, and represented indigent criminal defendants throughout the greater Boston area. He also competed on the Suffolk University Law School National Trial Team and was the Champion of the Inter-Scholastic Second-Year Day/Third-Year Evening Trial Competition. Before earning his J.D., Mr. Merchant attended the University of Central Florida where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a minor in Religious Studies.
Outside of the legal arena, Mr. Merchant enjoys comic books, reading, skiing, traveling and spending time with his family. He is currently licensed to practice in the State of New York and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
