SMSM Attorney Obtains Victory in Pro Bono Political Asylum Case

Arturo M. Aviles, a Senior Associate in Segal McCambridge's Austin, Texas office, recently prepared, filed, and represented pro bono client Mr. A in his successful application for political asylum. Mr. A and many generations of his family have been active members of the main opposition party in the Togolese Republic. As a result of this activism, Mr. A, a college student, and his family were continously harassed, detained, assaulted, and tortured by government security forces. The family home was burned to the ground and Mr. A's family was eventually forced to flee Togo. Fearing for his life, Mr. A fled to the United States. The Asylum Office of the USCIS granted Mr. A's petition for asylum in August 2006. Mr. Aviles is proud to report that Mr. A has returned to pursuing his college education.
