Segal McCambridge Associate Evan Powell successfully represented a single mother who was working to turn her life around while facing a number of criminal charges in DuPage County. The client had temporarily lost custody of her child and also faced domestic battery, retail theft, and two probation violation charges stemming from a series of events related to an abusive domestic relationship.
After making the commitment to get her life back on track and getting herself into The Well of Mercy, a Chicago-area women’s shelter, her pending criminal matters were referred to Mr. Powell through The Well of Mercy and Detroit Shareholder Eric Conn, who has done work for The Well of Mercy in the past.
Mr. Powell worked closely with the client and Well of Mercy, and was able to force the State of Illinois to dismiss the domestic battery and retail theft charges after the State’s witnesses failed to appear for trial. As a result of these dismissals, and the client’s adherence to her probation requirements at the direction of Mr. Powell, the violation of probation charges were also withdrawn and the court terminated her probation successfully.
Thanks to the work of Mr. Powell and Segal McCambridge, the client now has been reunited with her family, including her young child, is gainfully employed, and has enrolled in college with hopes of becoming a social worker.
