Recent Developments and Medical Issues In Ephedra Litigation

Ephedra, also known as ma-huang, is an herbal remedy that has been used for over 5,000 years to treat common colds, asthma and other upper-respiratory illnesses. Ephedra is a shrub-like plant found in the deserts of central Asia and arid regions throughout the world. It is the herbal precursor to ephedrine, an FDA-regulated drug used in over-the-counter asthma and cold remedies. Ephedrine works by stimulating the central nervous system, dilating bronchial tubes, elevating blood pressure and increasing heart rate.
